Slain Somerset County woman's newborn baby dies

PITTSBURGH — The newborn daughter of a local woman who was pregnant when she was fatally shot last month has now also died.

The Cambria County coroner will investigate the death of Abrianna Kovalcik, but state police don't expect autopsy results for six to eight weeks due necessary laboratory tests.

The baby's mother, 23-year-old Caressa Kovalcik, died after police said her boyfriend shot her in their Windber apartment on May 31.

The baby was delivered by C-section shortly before Caressa Kovalcik died, and was later moved to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where the baby died early Friday.

Denver Blough, 25, remained in the Cambria County Prison Friday on criminal homicide and other charges in the shooting, which he has said was an accident.

According to police, any decision on additional charges will depend on the autopsy results.

Attorney Matt Zatko released the following statement Friday on behalf of Caressa Kovalcik’s parents:

“It was with immense sadness that Bob and Anne Kovalcik informed us of the passing of their granddaughter, Abrianna Lyric Kovalcik.

“They would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, while also requesting that their privacy and that of their family be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
