Surveillance captures repeat burglar at South Side laundromat

PITTSBURGH — A South Side laundromat owner is becoming all too familiar with a burglar who has struck several times in the past few weeks.

Mart Whaley told Channel 11's Courtney Brennan the money the burglar gets away with is minimal compared to the thousands of dollars in damage he causes.

“Last week when he was in here on Friday, he did more than $10,000 worth of damage to the equipment,” Whaley said.

Whaley said he’s given surveillance video to the police in hopes of identifying the man responsible.

“This is seven times in two weeks he’s come in here. We have great pictures of him doing it,” Whaley said.

According to Whaley, the man tries to pry open the machines’ coin boxes with a crowbar.

“At first, the man wore a hoodie and tried to disguise who he was. Now, it’s like he doesn’t even care,” Whaley said. “What he’s doing is prying and bending until it breaks the system open and he can take the money box out and dump the money.”
