Teacher hit by car in crosswalk near school in Evans City

EVANS CITY, Pa. — A fifth- and sixth-grade Evans City teacher was hit by a car Wednesday morning as she was walking to work.

According to police, Barb Jaspersen was taken to an area hospital after a car hit her while she was crossing Route 68 in the crosswalk on her way to school about 7:30 a.m.

Authorities said Jaspersen is going to be OK, but they’re worried about the area where she was hit.

Investigators said the driver who hit Jaspersen was not speeding, and the school crossing lights had not yet been turned on.

Evans City police officers direct school traffic Monday through Friday before and after school because Route 68 is a high traffic area, Evans City police officer Trina Loesch said.

“You need to pay attention and slow down. Although it’s not a state law, we would appreciate it if you would get off your cellphone when driving through a school area,” Loesch said.

Police said the driver of the car didn’t see Jaspersen, and stopped immediately after hitting her.
