Makeshift memorial grows after girl, 4, killed by falling TV

None — PITTSBURGH -- A memorial of balloons and stuffed animals is growing outside the home of a 4-year-old girl who was killed when a television fell on her late Wednesday night.

Police said the accident happened at a home in Northview Heights. Investigators said the 30-inch TV fell on Shaniya Darby-Sims while she was attempting to turn the television on.

Officers said the TV was sitting on a dresser and fell about three feet before crushing the child.

“They'll enjoy it,” neighbor Charmaine Williams said of the memorial. “They'll know we care about the child.  They'll know we love the child.  The residents loved the child."

“Try to show our respect, because she is a neighbor and I just don't want anyone else to go through this tragedy,” said neighbor Nakeya Johnson.

Shaniya’s mother said she heard a loud noise, ran upstairs and found her daughter under the TV. She told police that she lifted the television off of the girl and dialed 911.

Officers who were on patrol said they responded to the home within minutes and found the girl unresponsive, with a faint pulse.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where she later died.
