US Energy Secretary: price for gas should go down this fall

PITTSBURGH — Some people who work in downtown Pittsburgh with long commutes are looking forward to some relief at the pump.

“We are all really feeling it as we go back to work more commuting and filling up my tank,” said Patrick Morello.

Morello, who works downtown and commutes from the Cranberry Township area, said he’s feeing the strain.

In Western Pennsylvania, it’s around $5 a gallon to fill up. According to AAA, gas prices are three cents lower this week at $4.98 per gallon. That’s the average price right now in Pittsburgh.

However, the U.S. energy secretary told Channel 11 that the price for gas is projected to go down this fall.

“Our energy information administration has projected that because oil and gas are trying to come back on the price per gallon on average will be about $4.37 at the end of the third quarter,” said Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Secretary of Energy.

Morello said this could have a positive impact for many families looking to save money at the pump.

“I think it will definitely help with the commuting, but it will also help with other things that is passing down to the consumers like food and other things you buy every day. You don’t realize being impacted by the gas prices,” said Morello.

However, there are a lot of factors that play into this.

“Depends on what happens globally because oil is traded on a global market. We are at the whim on what’s happening globally,” said Granholm.

The Biden administration believes prices could drop in the coming months, possibly more than 60 cents.
