MORGANTOWN — A West Virginia man will receive jail time for trying to purchase a child in Mexico, police say.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Scott David Bixler, 43, of Morgantown, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by a lifetime of supervision.

Authorities said Bixler, a previously convicted sex offender, fled to Mexico in July 2023 after failing to appear in state court for sentencing. At that time, he was facing criminal charges for failing to register as a sex offender.

Bixler was arrested in Mexico with his spouse after Mexican police stopped them from trying to buy a young girl. Police said Bixler had two pellet guns, methamphetamine, a cell phone jammer and a large amount of cash when the arrest was made.

“The sentence handed down by the Court ensures that the Defendant will be confined in prison for the maximum time allowed by law,” said Acting United States Attorney Randolph J. Bernard. “I shudder to think what might have happened but for the dedication of AUSA Perri, the federal and state law enforcement agencies, as well as the Mexican authorities. Our community and children are safer because of their efforts and the sentence imposed.”

The FBI and the U.S. Marshals Services worked with West Virginia State Police for this investigation.
