Family of 6 escapes fire in Westmoreland County home

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Hempfield Township family is out of their home after a house fire along Newport Drive on Wednesday night.

The Kissell family says they’re grateful for their safety after a scary situation.

Six family members: a couple, three children, and their grandmother were home when the fire broke out around 6 pm.

“We believe it was a kitchen fire that spread throughout the structure,” said Hempfield Twp. Fire Chief Anthony Kovacic.

Firefighters were on scene for two and a half hours battling the smoke and flames that they say stretched from the main level to the attic.

“The fire department arrived on scene and had heavy fire throughout the kitchen area,” said Kovacic. “We worked quickly to suppress that fire.”

Fire investigators are still working to determine what specifically sparked the flames and estimate how much damage was caused to the home.

Neighbors are rallying around the Kissell family, stopping by throughout the day Thursday to offer help and condolences. Donations have also poured into an online fundraiser that has a $20,000 goal.
