• Woman killed in crash has lasting impact on husband, children

PITTSBURGH - In a matter of moments, Oscar Tates became a widower and a single father several days after his wife gave birth to a boy.

Tates’ wife, Melissa  died in a car accident March 2 on Liberty Avenue in the Strip District, about two weeks after giving birth to their son, Jai.

“She was awesome. She loved the kids,” Tates said about Melissa.

Tates thinks his wife fell asleep on her way to the hospital because she had been driving back and forth from Beaver Falls to Pittsburgh every day.

Tates said their newborn son had complications and needed to stay in the hospital. Melissa  wanted to be with him as much as possible.

“That’s the kind of mother she was,” Tates said.

Oscar Tates and Melissa Tates have a 3-year-old daughter, Emily, who is now one of Oscar’s main priorities.

“It is hard, but I am the dad and I am going to raise these babies. They will always remember their mother,” Tates said.

Tates said because he’s now raising his two children on his own, he’s having financial problems. To find out how you can donate to Tates and his family, visit Amy Marcinkiewicz’s official Facebook page.
