• Man arrested for assault of PAT driver

PITTSBURGH - A Pittsburgh man awaited arraignment Saturday night on aggravated assault charges after he was arrested in the beating of a Port Authority bus driver.

Authorities said a passenger on the bus traveling through the East Hills Saturday morning intervened to assist bus driver Johnene Barnett after Joseph Ozias Shumba, 32, of East Hills, attacked her with a metal wheelchair lift bar when she told him he was short of fare.

A police complaint said video from the bus showed Shumba getting on the bus.

When the bus stopped a block later, it showed Shumba grabbing a wheelchair lift bar and repeatedly strike Barnett until a second passenger, identified only as Joseph Phillips managed to throw Shumba off the bus.

Police detained Shumba shortly afterwards and filed a complaint charging him with two counts of aggravated assault.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Barnett was treated and released, said Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie.
Phillips suffered minor injuries but declined treatment, Ritchie said.
