Democrats on Tuesday nominated Marc Friedenberg to fill the term of Republican Tom Marino, who resigned just three weeks into his fifth congressional term.
The 35-year-old Friedenberg is a lawyer and Penn State information technology instructor. Republican delegates are scheduled to pick a nominee March 2, ahead of the May 21 special election.
Several Republicans are already seeking their party's nomination, including Tuesday's announcement by Iraq War veteran Stacy Garrity, a first-time candidate.
The sprawling congressional district covers all or parts of 15 counties, and Republicans are heavily favored, with about 100,000 more registered voters than Democrats.
