Police: Man dies after trying to help break up fight in Turtle Creek

TURTLE CREEK, Pa. — A Turtle Creek man has died after trying to break up a fight over the weekend.

Police said James Payne, 58, tried to break up a fight between the couple next door.

"We were sitting on the porch, and we saw a couple of cop cars going around the back.  The next thing we saw were three policemen running up the street," said a neighbor.

Danny Washington, 30, is accused of delivering a fatal punch to Payne's head.

Police said Payne stepped in to protect Washington's girlfriend from being attacked.

Neighbors said Payne was always looking out for others.

"I'm sorry to hear it.  He was a good guy looking out of the neighborhood and everything," said a neighbor.

Washington was charged with aggravated assault after the alleged beating.

Allegheny County police have taken over the investigation.  Channel 11's Timyka Artist reported that since the death has been ruled a homicide, Washington's charges could be upgraded Tuesday.
