PITTSBURGH — A Butler County mother is working to keep kids warm and comfortable during a time that might feel exactly the opposite.

Leah Cairns started a drive to collect fuzzy socks for kids at UPMC Children’s Hospital. She enlisted businesses and schools like Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School to join.

Cairns said she feels for the kids who have to spend any amount of time there and she wanted them to have something soft to make them feel better.

“The children have brought in so many socks to help their peers, as well. It’s been so exciting. The community is what made this drive possible. They just needed a vehicle to get there,” she said.

Cairns said she plans to donate more than 1,000 socks later this month. Leah Cairns and the Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School make us Proud to be From Pittsburgh.
