Proud to be from Pittsburgh: Queen's Gambit

Ashley Priore knows her way around a chessboard. She's played since she was 4 years old. Now, she's teaching a new generation of chess talent.

"When I started I was 14," Priore said. "I considered that a big sacrifice because I was just starting high school."

Priore started the nonprofit Queen's Gambit because she wanted to grow the chess scene and help children across Pittsburgh fall in love with the challenging game. The Pitt student now wants to see it become a key part of the city.

"I want to see it become a part of Pittsburgh that impacts it," Priore said.

Several of her young players we met are ranked. She teaches classes all over the city, including Oakland, Squirrel Hill and Wilkinsburg. Priore says some classes can add up to thousands of dollars fast. But she teaches for free.

"Chess is one of those things where you can just find pieces and play anywhere, so we feel like those opportunities should be available," Priore said.

Queen's Gambit is working with the mayor of Wilkinsburg right now to see how chess classes could impact local schools and community groups.
