$10 million to help farmers, Pennsylvanians struggling to feed families

PITTSBURGH — A $10 million investment to help people struggling to put food on the table has been announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

With the COVID-19 pandemic showing no signs of letting up, leaders say the initiative is a win-win by helping to support farmers by purchasing their surplus crops and then providing that food to those who are struggling.

Extra assistance will be provided to people through the $10 million contract with Feeding Pennsylvania, which is made up of groups such as the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

“There are fields of produce. There’s milk that’s been dumped, eggs that have been discarded. This is the solution to that,” Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding said.
