1,000 Pittsburgh students expected to be turned away from postponed summer program

PITTSBURGH — More than 1,000 Pittsburgh Public Schools students are expected to be turned away from a summer program that’s been postponed because of staffing shortages.

The district’s Summer BOOST program is postponed by one week, and is now set to start up on June 28.

During the one-week delay, district staff will reduce the number of students who are served by the program based on student need.

“The District anticipates the need to reduce the Summer BOOST program by more than 1,000 students should it not secure the necessary staff this week,” the district’s website said.

Families will receive information about their status in the program on Friday.

“We may have to reduce approximately 1,000 students but we don’t want that,” said chief academic officer Minika Jenkins.
