One out of three Pittsburgh Public School educators, support staff have received a COVID-19 vaccine

PITTSBURGH — By the end of the day Thursday, around one-third of Pittsburgh Public Schools educators and support staff will have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Thursday, 1,400 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine were given at Heinz Field in partnership with PPS, Giant Eagle, the Steelers and the federal pharmacy program.

Simultaneously, the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine was given at Obama Academy in East Liberty through the Pittsburgh-Mount Oliver Intermediate Unit.

It’s one of more than two dozen intermediate units statewide now vaccinating pre-K through 12th grade educators and support staff.

Gov. Tom Wolf said last week his goal is to have everyone in that group vaccinated by the end of March.

Another 1,500 received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at Obama Academy in East Liberty.

The turnout Thursday was so strong that a second day won’t be needed.

Giant Eagle will vaccinate 1,600 people in Phase 1A on Friday instead, as a plan to vaccinate more educators throughout western Pennsylvania starts Monday.
