412 Food Rescue chose Pittsburgh’s North Side for distribution based on food insecurity

PITTSBURGH — 412 Food Rescue held another food distribution event on Pittsburgh’s North Side to help families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It marked the second such event in as many days for the organization. Officials with 412 Food Rescue told Channel 11 they chose the North Side for Saturday’s distribution at Clayton Academy due in part to food insecurity in the area and access to transportation.

Friday’s event was held in Clairton.

“You know, a lot of food pantries are well-stocked with staples. You can get a lot of non-perishable foods there but fresh fruits and produce can be really hard for families to get ahold of so this is a way to just augment their diet, make sure they’re eating healthy and make sure that they have enough really good, high quality food during this time,” Jennifer England said.

Volunteers filled nearly 400 boxes with fresh fruits and vegetables for families in need. Schneider’s Dairy donated about 600 gallons of milk.
