9 people, several businesses displaced after fire rips through Dormont apartment

DORMONT, Pa. — Nine people are without a home and some businesses are forced to close at least temporarily after a fire ripped through a Dormont apartment complex.

The building along West Liberty Avenue is now a smoky shell and the doors of the tattoo shop, Greek restaurant and salon on the first floor are shut.

“Explosion, two times. Explosion and, in a couple of minutes, the fire started,” said Pedro Alverez. “Neighbors, everyone hitting the door to open.”

Alverez and his brother were trying to air out some of the smoke and carry bags of clothes to a nearby laundromat.

Everyone was able to get out without any injuries.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating. The Red Cross is also assisting the families who were displaced.
