Animal Friends, PAART team up to help Hurricane Harvey dogs

PITTSBURGH — Animal Friends has partnered with the Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team to help pets struggling after Hurricane Harvey.

On Friday, volunteers from PAART will drive a truck packed with pet supplies to Texas.

PAART will be returning on Monday with 27 dogs that were in shelters after delivering the supplies. This will help to free up space in the Texas animal shelters so they can help more animals displaced by the flooding.

Shelter officials in Texas said they cannot begin to estimate how many family pets were either caught up in the flood or left behind by their owners.

“I know it’s very small but it’s something we can do to provide a little bit of relief,” said Animal Friends Director of Communications Shannon Tremblay.

We've all seen the heartbreaking images of people and pets in need. Animal shelters all over Texas are approaching crisis mode.

“Locally, we really need canine adopters right now,” Tremblay said.

Keep in mind the dogs coming from Texas are not the dogs that were in the flood, but dogs that were already in a shelter looking for a home.

Animal Friends needs your help by adopting the animals currently at their facility to free up cage space.

“All of our animals are on our website, so you can see those sweet little faces that are up for adoption right now,” Tremblay said.

If you are unable to adopt, you can donate to Animal Friends to support the cost of caring for the canines that will be admitted.
