PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh-based Argo AI has secured a new permit from the California Public Utilities Commission that allows the autonomous vehicle technology company to offer rides to public passengers.

Per the permit’s guidelines, which is part of California’s Drivered Autonomous Vehicle Passenger Service Pilot program, rides must be offered at no cost to the passenger, and an operator must be present in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

“It’s a great step in our ability to further expand operations capability in CA, by enabling us to offer rides to partners and other key stakeholders to gain feedback on our efforts,” said Alan Hall, the communications director for Argo AI.
