Arrest made in Southwest Greensburg hit-and-run that left man severely injured

SOUTHWEST GREENSBURG, Pa. — It took over a year, but there’s some closure tonight for the family of Nathan Bober after the man accused of hitting him with his truck in southwest Greensburg and taking off is in jail.

Justin Hudspath was just charged with aggravated assault by vehicle in the December 2019 accident.

“The first part was scary. He wasn’t even awake and we didn’t know if he was going to make it,” said Bober’s friend Nick Smarto.

The accident changed Nathan’s life.

“It hasn’t changed his personality but he gets tired frequent, the recovery is like swimming thru thick mud and he’s in this fog,” Smarto said.

Police were able to identify the truck through the public’s help. An anonymous tip led to a picture of the truck. Hudspath was allegedly driving, but it belonged to his employer.

Police said they found Hudspath’s mail inside the truck and a coworker told them he and Hudspath were drinking at a bar after work just before the accident.

“Nathan is incredibly kind and has not let the ambiguity of the criminal case restrict from improving and healing from the criminal case,” Smarto said.

Nathan has had extensive time in the hospital since with months in rehab. He had multiple skull fractures and a traumatic brain injury.

Meantime, Hudspath is in the Armstrong County Jail awaiting his arraignment in this case.

“If this suspect would’ve just called 911, and accepted responsibility earlier, a lot better outcome would’ve came out of this situation for all the parties. It’s a good anecdote for anybody - don’t run from the scene of a crime. It doesn’t pay off,” Smarto said.

Police said Hudspath was actually at the scene that night and they talked to him. They said he claimed to just be a passerby and gave officers a false address.

We asked the district attorney why it took so long to file charges in the case. He said there’s always a reason but couldn’t say why.
