Bears' repeat visits worry neighborhood residents

Repeat visits from black bears have unnerved residents of a small neighborhood in Fayette County.

One woman showed Channel 11 photos of bears appearing in the same spot in the area for two years in a row in Smock.

What really worries residents now is that cubs are tagging along with the bear this time.

Residents called the Pennsylvania Game Commission because they were concerned about how close the bears were getting to homes and children.

A game commissioner officer came out to do some investigating and told certain people to put all food away.

It's not unusual for bears to be out right now. The Pennsylvania Game Commission said there are about 20,000 black bears across the state and mating season is from early June until about mid-July.

It's more likely to see the bears at dawn and dusk.

The game commission suggests putting all food sources away at night, including bird feeders because bears are attracted to that right now since there aren't any berries in the woods yet.

The game commission also says do not intentionally feed the bears because it is against the law and you could face a citation if you're caught.
