Beloved owner of Beaver County ice cream stand dies of COVID-19

ZELIENOPLE, Pa. — A black ribbon now hangs outside a popular Beaver County ice cream stand in honor of its late owner, one of the latest people in our area to fall victim to COVID-19.

People from all over the community have been dropping off flowers, candles, balloons and cards in front of Young’s Custard Stand in Rochester.

Paul Young, better known as “Windy,” ran the business with his kids for the last 52 years. Last week, his family said he passed away at 79 years old from COVID-19 complications.

“Hearing about him passing so quickly from it just puts some perspective on how serious it is,” said Lydia Palmer, an employee at the business.

She lives down the road from the custard stand and has known Young her entire life. She said he was like a grandfather to her.

Palmer told Channel 11 she will miss his sense of humor the most, and the stand will not be the same without him. But his legacy will live on.
