Broken fire hydrant causes gushing water to affect drivers, businesses on Banksville Road

PITTSBURGH — A large water main break affected drivers for hours in the South Hills Saturday morning.

Emergency officials said the break was near Tropical Avenue and Crane Avenue. According to PA American Water Company officials, it was a broken fire hydrant on Wentworth and Belasco avenues that caused a steady flow of water.

For about 90 minutes, water was gushing down the hill on Crane Avenue onto Banksville Road below.

With temperatures below freezing Saturday morning, there were concerns for drivers that the water could freeze to the road.

Traffic was diverted off of Banksville Road near the break for hours. Emergency crews shut off the water to stop the flow of water before cleaning up the roadway.

Even with all the muddy mess, the Eat'n Park stayed open for business.
