PITTSBURGH — For many people, eating pork and sauerkraut is a New Year’s Day tradition. For others in our area, they celebrate the new year with a jump into the icy Monongahela River.
The annual Pittsburgh Plunge was held Wednesday morning at the Mon Wharf.
Dozens of people, along with Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert, took a dip in the river just after 9 a.m.
Frank Nelson founded the Pittsburgh Polar Bear Club. He’s been doing this for 55 years.
“There is no sane reason,” Nelson told Channel 11. “You just have to be insane. No, it’s fun.”
The event benefits a local charity.
