WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — A duplex caught fire in West Mifflin on Sunday.
The fire started around 7 a.m. in the 200 block of Utah Avenue, according to officials.
Police confirmed to Channel 11 it was a kitchen fire that started on the first floor.
A man who lives in the duplex told Channel 11’s Louri Houy he believes he knows what caused the fire to start.
That man said he thinks a malfunctioning space heater started the fire.
A husband and wife, who got out safely, told Channel 11 they awoke to smoke in the apartment.

A few hours later, family and friends returned to the building to salvage anything they could.
After an initial investigation, the Fire Chief told Channel 11 that officials believe it was an accidental fire, caused by an “appliance power cord failure.”
The Allegheny County Fire Marshal continues to investigate.
