COVID-19 pandemic having big impact on some international students

The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting a number of international students.

Eric Brown, a graduate student at Duquesne University, said he’s struggling to pay his rent.

He said a private loan to fund his education was cut, but he said he had received some help from the university with food, rent and counseling.

His family lives in Ghana, but he says he can’t get there due to travel restrictions.

That’s not his only challenge.

“How we feed ourselves is very challenging,” Brown said.

About 25 students were given food at a food drive for international students and others in the community. It was organized by Afrika Yetu, Inc.

“Imagine they tell you the money is cut. You can’t go home. So you find yourself that you don’t even know who to ask,” said Elie Kihonia, president and CEO of Afrika Yetu, Inc.

A number of organizations are also trying to help the students.
