COVID-19 record broken Friday with 11,763 new cases in Pa.; 5,071 people hospitalized

PITTSBURGH — With 11,763 new COVID-19 cases Friday, Pennsylvania again broke its record for the highest daily increase.

There are 5,071 people hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Of that number, 1,065 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older.

As of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, there were 169 new deaths reported for a total of 11,113 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Most deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

Statewide, there has been a total of 398,600 coronavirus cases since the pandemic started.

There are 2,893,321 people who have tested negative to date.

In Allegheny County, there were 911 new COVID-19 cases and 26 new deaths reported Friday.

Just through the first four days of December, Allegheny Co. has seen 61 deaths from coronavirus -- which is just over 10% of the total deaths reported in the county since mid-March when the pandemic began.

According to the Allegheny County Health Department, 830 of the new cases are confirmed cases from 2,794 tests. The remaining 81 cases are probable cases.

New cases range in age from 1 month to 100 years, with a median age of 43 years. The dates of positive tests were from Oct. 8 to Dec. 3. There were 33 tests that were more than a week old.

The 26 new deaths were two people in their 50s, two people in their 60s, five people in their 70s, six people in their 80s and 11 people in their 90s. They died between Nov. 18 to December 3.

Sixteen of the deaths were associated with long-term care facilities.

Since March 14, there have been 31,454 cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County residents, 2,189 hospitalizations and 570 deaths.
