DA: Body found in Derry Twp. believed to be missing Vandergrift woman

DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A buried body found Thursday in Derry Township is believed to be a Vandergrift woman who went missing in February, Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck said Saturday.

The body was found in a heavily wooded area off Strawcutter Road, just a few miles from Keystone State Park. Circumstances that led detectives to the area and items found there led investigators to believe that the remains are those of 34-year-old Ronny Cable, Peck said.

Cable, a mother of two, was last seen in mid-February. Authorities released surveillance photos of Cable at a Walmart, and she was later seen leaving her Vandergrift home with two men in a red vehicle.

Though Peck said the remains have not been definitively identified as Cable, both he and the coroner said they have every reason to believe the remains are those of Cable. The death is being investigated as a homicide.

Cable's friends said they are in disbelief and shock. While they are anxiously awaiting the truth and some answers, they said they are hurting for Cable's two children, who are now growing up without their mom.

Detectives and the coroner’s office were at the scene in Derry Township Friday afternoon. A Mercyhurst University forensic anthropology team is also involved in the investigation.

Authorities said detectives are actively investigating strong leads, and are still uncovering new details as they wait for positive identification.
