Deadline day: Nearly 90% of Allegheny County employees have at least 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine

PITTSBURGH — Wednesday is the deadline for Allegheny County executive branch employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. There are roughly 5,000 employees this mandate pertains to.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said he was pleased with the numbers, telling Channel 11 “well over 90% of our employees have not only got vaccinated, but have already gotten two vaccinations. And a lot more coming in.”

But while many have complied with this mandate, in recent days two local unions have filed lawsuits seeking to block the mandate. But just last week a judge denied a request from the Allegheny County prison employees union and county police to halt the vaccine job requirement, after members of both unions argued it should be their choice to get vaccinated.

Those county employees who do not comply with the mandate can face termination if they do not have either a medical or religious exemption.
