WASHINGTON — Democrats plan to introduce a bill Thursday to expand the U.S. Supreme Court from nine to 13 justices, according to NBC News.
The bill is led by Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York. It is co-sponsored by Reps. Hank Johnson of Georgia and Mondaire Jones of New York.
The Supreme Court can be expanded by an act of Congress. Democrats do hold a slim majority, but it is not believed this bill will become law. Many lawmakers are not on board with expanding the court and President Joe Biden said he’s not in favor of packing the court.
The move comes after Biden created a commission to study the structure of the Supreme Court.
There have been nine justices since 1869.
