Dump trucks carrying dangerous, oversized loads of hot rock on Rankin Bridge, police say

RANKIN, Pa. — A large number of dump trucks are carrying dangerous oversized loads of hot rock from the U.S. Steel plant through two local towns, and police are not happy about it.

Police told Channel 11 on Tuesday that a truck carrying an illegal load dumped debris on the Rankin Bridge from end to end, restricting drivers to one lane to clean up what Police Chief Ryan Wooten called "a big mess."

The trucking company was cited for 13 violations and fined nearly $6,000.

North Braddock Police Chief Isaac Daniele is also frustrated.

"They go, they drop it, they come back, get reloaded. It's all day long," Daniele said.

Both of the chiefs told Channel 11 that probably a hundred trucks hauling coke oven debris are rumbling through their communities each day. They said many of those trucks over-loaded and the haul is uncovered. They say these are unsafe conditions.

"We have no problem with them making a living, but how they make their living is how many times they run to the mill and run to the dump back and forth," Wooten said.
