Eaglet No. 3 hatches in Pittsburgh’s Hays bald eagle nest

PITTSBURGH — For the first time since 2014, three eaglets have hatched in Pittsburgh’s Hays bald eagle nest.

The third eaglet of the year hatched early Saturday morning, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania announced

The Hays Bald Eagles laid three eggs this year. This is the fifth time the pair has had three eggs in the nest. In 2016, 2018, and 2019, three eggs were laid but only two hatched. In 2017, the nest blew down in a windstorm.

Bald eagle eggs typically take around 35 to 38 days to hatch.

Now that there are three eaglets and an egg in the nest, an adult eagle will stay on the nest constantly, with the just-hatched eaglets remaining beneath the adult for warmth, and food will be brought to the nest.
