Family devastated after man hit by a car, left to die in Pittsburgh neighborhood

PITTSBURGH — A man was left to die after being hit by a car in Pittsburgh’s Larimer neighborhood.

Kerry Johnson, 43, was struck by a car at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Frankstown Avenue early Monday morning. The driver didn’t stop to call for help.

Days later, Johnson is in an intensive care unit on breathing and feeding tubes at the hospital – with several fractures to his face.

“I was stunned, I was sad,” said Johnson’s uncle, Calvin Jackson. “How could someone hit someone and then just keep going? I mean, I would never do that.”

Johnson, who walked with a limp and was partially paralyzed after suffering a seizure as a teen, lived with his aunt and uncle in Garfield. They said he lost his mother this summer, and after that he often wandered off on long walks.

His aunt and uncle are hoping that sharing Johnson's will help find the driver who hit him.

Police said the driver sped away in a brown Subaru Legacy, leaving Johnson unconscious in the crosswalk.

Johnson's family hopes that surveillance video from the area may have picked up a clue.
