Former residents gather in Penn Plaza for rally

EAST LIBERTY, Pa. — Demolition has started again at the former Penn Plaza site in East Liberty, and former residents rallied on Thursday.

The former residents still want the site to turn into affordable housing and not luxury apartments.

LG Realty is currently working on the site at the corner of Penn and Negley in East Liberty.

People who used to live there said they were pushed out with no place to go. The city has tried to help them find places to stay.

Some of the former residents told Channel 11 they have hope.

“Whole Foods dropped out of the project earlier this year,” said Karen Edmonds, a former resident.

The former residents would like to see the new developer sell the property to the city to create affordable housing.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto's chief of staff, Kevin Acklin, said. "We applaud the residents of East Liberty, Garfield and surrounding neighborhoods for standing up for affordable housing and for community-driven development, and we continue to encourage the developers of Penn Plaza to work with the community to create a development we all can be proud of."

Channel 11's attempts to contact the developer were not immediately successful. Stay with Channel 11 News and WPXI.com for continuing coverage.
