Frustration, confusion felt over missing stimulus payments

PITTSBURGH — While millions of Americans have received the latest Economic Impact Payment, others are left wondering if and when their checks are coming.

Channel 11 has received numerous emails from residents who have not received their third stimulus checks, which the IRS began distributing last month. Other viewers claim they never received the second payment, despite being eligible.

“It’s very frustrating,” said Betsy Lucas, a local resident. “Where’s my money?”

According to the IRS website, batches are still being sent out on a weekly basis, so “if you haven’t received one yet, it doesn’t mean you won’t.” The website features a “Get My Payment” tool to track payments. However, some users are receiving a “not available” response. “Not available” could mean your check hasn’t been processed yet, you aren’t eligible or the IRS doesn’t have enough of your information.

In Lucas’ case, she says that the site states that her check was already deposited, yet she doesn’t have the money accessible in her bank account. She also isn’t sure that she received what she was owed in regard to the second check.

“I never got a letter, I’ve gotten nothing from them. It’s just, it’s crazy.”

According to the IRS, if you didn’t receive your first or second check, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return to do so, even if you are someone who isn’t required to file. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/recovery-rebate-credit

Lucas has attempted to reach the IRS to get her situation sorted out. The IRS site says that people should not call, as “our phone assistors don’t have information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.”

Channel 11 contacted IRS Media Relations Thursday. A spokesperson was not able to facilitate an interview. In response to questions we emailed, we received information and links that had been copied and pasted from the website along with this press release.
