• Greensburg family awaits news of adoption in Puerto Rico

    Updated:

Outside of PNC Park, hundreds showed up Tuesday to donate food and supplies for Puerto Rico after it was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Among them was Greg Wallace, who drove in from Greensburg. For him, this is personal.

    “It’s been heart-wrenching,” he said.

    TRENDING NOW:

Wallace and his wife are adopting a 12-year-old girl from Puerto Rico. For nearly two weeks, they've been on pins and needles not knowing if she's OK.

“We have recently gotten communication with the social worker, but there's been no communication between her and the foster family,” he said.

The Puerto Rico that Wallace remembers has been battered. The communication system is down. The electrical grid is down. And medical care is hard to come by.

Which also fuels concern for Wallace and his wife, who has relatives in Puerto Rico.

“My father-in-law, in particular, we are very concerned about because he is an insulin-dependent diabetic, and he also is on hemodialysis,” Wallace said.

He's receiving limited treatment at a clinic running on generators, Wallace said. They are trying to get him medevaced to Pittsburgh.

Each passing day basic supplies needed to survive are dwindling. But Wallace is hopeful, especially after he saw the turnout Tuesday.

“When you call out to the people of Pittsburgh and ask for help, no matter who it is, no matter who they are, no matter where they are from, Pittsburghers respond and respond big,” Wallace said.
