Gun buyback in Pittsburgh neighborhood to honor MLK’s message of nonviolence

PITTSBURGH — In an effort to reduce the number of guns in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood, a gun buyback event is being held Monday to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his message of nonviolence, officials said.

Leaders of the Church of the Holy Cross have teamed up with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and other groups for the gun buyback, offering up to $100 per gun with no questions asked.

The gun buyback will be held at the church, located on Kelly Street, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.

“If we can make a difference, perhaps, by buying a few guns, getting them off the streets out of the hands of people, we might be able to save a life or two, and that would be well worth the effort,” Leon Haley, Church of the Holy Cross and board chair, said.

The Church of the Holy Cross is raising funds to cover the cost of the buyback event. Donations are being accepted online (CLICK HERE) or through checks mailed to the church.
