High school wrestling champion shot by police after not dropping weapon, police say

A high school wrestling champion was shot by police Sunday after investigators said he was standing outside with an AR-15 and would not drop it when officers commanded him to.

Officers responded to an assault call on West McMurray Road in North Strabane Township just before 2:30 a.m. The road was closed for nearly eight hours during the investigation.

"From my bedroom window I could hear a lot of screaming, dogs barking, and then several gunshots," neighbor Barb Nicolella said.

Channel 11 has confirmed 19-year-old Logan Macri, who lives in the home with his mother, was shot after allegedly refusing to put down the gun.

It's unclear what led to the initial 911 call, but troopers said it was a dispute between Macri and his mother. Friends of the family said he had friends over that night, then grew agitated and the situation escalated.

Investigators told Channel 11 the police from North Strabane and Canonsburg arrived to find Macri out front holding the gun.

"The officers gave verbal commands.  The male subject didn't comply with those commands and officers were forced to fire upon him with their service weapons. The male was struck several times," Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Dale Brown said.

Macri, a former state champion for Canon-Mac High School, is familiar to North Strabane police because three years ago he organized a donation drive, bringing them food and drinks.

He later attended West Virginia University to wrestle, but administrators said he dropped out last November.
