Christmas tree goes up at The Rink at PPG Place; hours, tickets prices released ahead of opening

PITTSBURGH — The iconic Christmas tree is now up in downtown Pittsburgh and new details have been released of how The Rink at PPG Place will operate this holiday season.

The rink will be open from Nov. 19 through Feb. 27. Online tickets go on sale Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m.

Admission size will only be limited if state or local restrictions are put in place. Masks are not required on the ice or outdoors, but are required in the indoor skae rental area.

The Rink at PPG Place is 67% larger than the rink at Rockefeller Center in New York City and was replaced with a bigger one in 2015.

To ensure a successful start of the holiday season, installation of the tree started earlier than in previous years so that vendors can work through any kinks that may arise.

This year’s tree is a 60′ tall, energy efficient LED-lit holiday tree that can perform light shows choreographed to music. This is an exceptionally high-tech tree with over 100,000 LED lights and the capability to play 42 minutes of musical animation as well 150 scenes, making it a sparkling addition to Downtown Pittsburgh’s holiday traditions.

The season will kick off with the American Cancer Society’s Tribute of Light Ceremony and the grand lighting of the new tree.
