Light of Life delivers meals on Good Friday

PITTSBURGH — This is a holiday weekend for many and the Light of Life Rescue Mission wants to make sure that it feels like that for everybody.

Especially those who might not be able to get out for a meal or see any family. The organization delivered meals to 600 to 700 seniors across Pittsburgh, helping give them a special Easter weekend.

“I think its very important because the senior citizens haven’t had any contact from their families really,” volunteer Keri Baker said.

Baker said the organization is feeding fewer senior high rises than in years past because of COVID. Some have outbreaks, some the risk is too high, and some have staff that is sick. But for the 12 high rises they are doing, this meal will go a long way.

Volunteer Phil Mathew says the program saved his life and he’s thankful to be able to give back. He’s been doing it for five years and is putting out the call to others to do the same.

“In all of the craziness in this world and dysfunction, it just gives people hope. And if it can make them smile one day, and know that somebody cares and loves them, at the end of the day I just think you can change lives that way,” volunteer Phil Mathew said. “If anybody is out there and you feel it in your heart to give to light of life, it’s a great opportunity. They give to so many people.”
