Local salons doing a makeover to keep customers, employees apart while staying open

PITTSBURGH — Two local hair salons are doing a makeover to adhere to social distance guidelines when Gov. Tom Wolf gives the go-ahead to reopen.

It’s an industry that is not being allowed to open back up unless Wolf adds their county to the green category.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine addressed this during a Monday news conference.

“By definition those professionals, in addition to licensed massage therapists, provide services that do not allow for social distancing of being six feet away and thus they will not be able to participate in their activities in the yellow zone,” Levine said.

“Gov. Wolf, please, come on down! We’ll walk you through,” said Izzazu Salon Owner Gino Chiodo.

Gino Chiodo and Emilio Cornacchione have owne and operated Izzazu Salon for over 20 years. They said the shop has been closed due to COVID-19. But once the doors shut, they started to map out a safety plan for the day they get the green light to reopen.

“Here’s the reality: people want to get back to work but we want to do it safely. So let’s take a look at what that looks like,” Cornacchione said.

“There’s a lot of challenges out there for this industry and I hope they revisit it so we can get back to business,” said Geno Levi Salon owner Geno Levi.

He said his business has taken many of the same measures as Izzazu, even purchasing throw away caps for customers.
