Major construction project to begin in Strip District

PITTSBURGH — Detour signs are going up in the Strip District as the Pennsylvania Water and Sewer Authority starts a $13 million project.

PWSA will be replacing water and sewer lines starting Tuesday.

Hundreds of parking spots from 16th to 21st streets will be gone, and traffic in that stretch of Smallman Street will be down to one lane in each direction.

According to PWSA officials, the seven-month shutdown is part of the $13 million improvement project to upgrade the Strip District's 100 year old water and sewer system.

PWSA will be working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They reserve the right to work nights and weekends so they can stay on schedule.

Pedestrian walkways will still exist on both sides of the street.

PWSA plans to wrap up the projects in January of 2019.
