According to a tweet from Allegheny County, the loose barges reportedly struck the piers. It is unclear how many barges were loose.

Inspectors from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation examined the bridge before it reopened.

In late January, 12 barges broke loose on the Monongahela River, forcing the closure of several bridges in Pittsburgh.
