Allegheny Co. reports first COVID-19 death in young child, cases continue to surge statewide

PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Health released the latest coronavirus numbers across the state Tuesday, with more than 6,600 new cases and 3,400 people hospitalized.

According to the health department, there were 6,669 new positive COVID-19 cases in Pa. -- bringing the statewide total to 321,070.

Also, 3,459 people are currently hospitalized from coronavirus, and 767 of those are in the intensive care unit. Health officials said most of those hospitalized are ages 65 and older, and 81 new deaths were reported Tuesday.

The trend in the 14-day moving average of number of hospitalized patients per day has increased by nearly 2,200 since the end of September, according to the state health department.

In nursing homes across Pa. there are more than 32,000 cases among residents/patients and 6,437 among employees at over 1,200 facilities.

In Allegheny County, there were 541 new COVID-19 cases and four new deaths reported Tuesday.

According to the Allegheny County Health Department, 449 of the new cases are confirmed cases from 2,757 tests. The remaining 92 cases are probable cases.

New cases range in age from 6 months to 97 years, with a median age of 37 years. The dates of positive tests were from Oct. 18 to Nov. 23.

Three of the tests are more than a week old, and only one is from October.

The four new deaths were a young child who had underlying medical conditions, a person in their 60s, a person in their 80s and a person in their 90s. The dates of death ranged from Nov. 12 to Nov. 21. Two of the deaths were associated with long-term care facilities.

Since March 14, there have been 24,624 cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County residents, 1,870 hospitalizations and 486 deaths.
