Popular Pittsburgh swimming pool closed by muddy mess

PITTSBURGH — It wasn’t COVID-19 or a staffing shortage that forced the latest closure of one of Pittsburgh’s most popular swimming spots.

Sunday’s powerful storms caused a huge mudslide at the Schenley Park Pool.

Madeline Bain was among those who showed up Monday and were turned away.

“I was so sad that they were closed all last year, so I decided I’m going to get here right when it opens, but apparently not,” she said.

With several pools in the area still not open due to a lack of lifeguards, the Schenley Park closure reminds Mike Hitt what it was like in the summer of 2020.

“The best I could do was swim in the river last year which is OK, but you know,” he said.

City officials said the plan is to finish clearing out the mud on Tuesday and to fill the pool with water on Wednesday. After that, the filter will be restarted and the water will be chlorinated.

If all goes well, the pool could reopen within a week. However, more storms would likely delay that schedule.
