National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado touchdown in Mercer County

MERCER COUNTY — Strong storms Wednesday spun up a tornado in Mercer County. A damage survey team from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down near Sandy Lake Township around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Strong storms were moving through the area at the time and NWS estimated maximum winds from the tornado at 100 mph.

NWS records showed this was the 23rd tornado in Mercer County since 1950, and the first since June 16, 2019.
