Neighbors, drivers fed up with sinking Mt. Washington road before fix

PITTSBURGH — A sinking road had neighbors and drivers fed up on a residential street on Mt. Washington. For days, people said a portion of Augusta Street was getting deeper and deeper before it was fixed.

“Somebody decided to build a house there and now they dug it, took the street plates out of here, and left that monster hole,” Lenny Altavilla told Channel 11. “It’ll lift you right out of bed like ‘What was that?’.”

Unsuspecting drivers would often bottom out as they tried to drive across the sinking part of Augusta Street.

“That’s absolutely awful. I didn’t know it was that deep until the bottom of the car scraped across the concrete,” said Sam Polinski.

Other neighbors filed reports with the city, claiming drivers have popped their tires driving through the area.

A city spokesperson said crews cited Mark Torgent Mechanical, Inc. for improperly restoring the road. Channel 11 called the company which said crews were out making repairs Thursday. The contractor said crews were applying a temporary asphalt patch but there would be a permanent fix soon.
