North Allegheny votes to allow K-8 students back to class 5 days a week

WEXFORD, Pa. — Some students in the North Allegheny School District will be allowed to go back to class five days a week, the school board voted late Monday night.

K-8 students will be able to begin in-person learning full time starting in November. High school students will continue their learning using a hybrid model.

Here’s the plan that was voted on:

  • K-5 students going back to class five days a week beginning Nov. 4.
  • Students in grades 6 to 8 going back to class five days a week beginning Nov. 16.
  • High schoolers, grades 9 to 12, continuing with their hybrid in-class and online plan.

The district reported cases in Allegheny county are low, and it is able to safely distance students in classrooms and cafeterias. It stated the feedback from staff is that quality hybrid learning cannot be sustained well in the long term, but not everyone is on board.

Sixty parents talked during Monday night’s virtual meeting and expressed different feelings publicly.

“The issue being voted on tonight will have an unforgettable impact on the health and safety of our students, faculty and the public. Stop this nonsense now,” said parent Mark Marsico.

“I encourage you to vote to send the children back to school full time, in person, immediately. Send kids back to full-time learning immediately,” said parent Megan Reese.

On Monday, students in at least five school districts in the Pittsburgh region returned to the classrooms for in-person learning.
