Over 8,500 new COVID-19 cases reported in Pa., Westmoreland Co. sees highest total in weeks

ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Across Pennsylvania, there were 8,545 new COVID-19 cases reported, bringing the statewide total to 622,349.

There are 5,995 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those people, 1,174 patients are in the intensive care unit.

There were also 267 new deaths reported, for a total of 15,353 deaths across the state.

Meanwhile, Westmoreland County reported the most new coronavirus cases it has seen in about two weeks.

According to Channel 11 News’ exchange partners at TribLIVE, there were 466 new virus cases reported, the most since 542 cases were announced Dec. 15. Tuesday’s new cases bring the county’s case total to 18,855. In December, there have been 9,594 cases reported thus far, which account for about 51% of Westmoreland’s total cases.

Seven new coronavirus-related deaths were also reported Tuesday. The death total in Westmoreland County is now 394. Of that total, 195 deaths have come in December, making up almost 50% of total deaths.

The Allegheny County Health Department reported 1,020 new coronavirus cases in Allegheny County over the past 24 hours. The health department said 329 of those are confirmed out of 1,448 new tests.

The dates of positive tests ranged from Nov. 24 to Dec. 28, and 29 of the positive tests are more than a week old.

New cases range in age from 2 months to 98 years with a median age of 41 years.

According to health officials, there were 41 new deaths reported as well -- ranging from Dec. 3 to Dec. 26.

Of those deaths, one person was in their 40s, two people were in their 50s, six people were in their 60s, 11 people were in their 70s, 13 people were in their 80s and eight people were in their 90s. Twenty-one deaths were associated with long-term care facilities.

Since March 14, there have been 52,473 cases of COVID-19 in Allegheny County residents, 3,121 hospitalizations and 898 deaths.
